HDB committed to developments in Punggol

In a response to resident’s feedback on the lack of facilities in Punggol, HDB’s Deputy Director Dr Chong Fook Leong replied that HDB is committed to the developments in Punggol and facilities will gradually be implemented in Punggol when more residents move in.

In the response, Dr Chong said, “I refer to the letter, ‘Build enough facilities first to attract people to new estates’ (ST, May 11), by Mr Lee Kok Lin.

Like other HDB new towns, the development of Punggol is planned in phases. Facilities are implemented to keep pace with the development of the town. Those that require a larger critical mass to be viable, such as the town centre or sports complex, will come on stream when more residents have moved in.

In the meantime, residents are provided with essential facilities on a smaller scale, such as neighbourhood shops and precinct facilities like multi-purpose courts, jogging tracks and fitness stations. They can also make use of facilities in neighbouring towns, such as the sports complex in Sengkang which is expected to be ready early next year.

HDB has concentrated its building programme to launch more new flats in Punggol and Sengkang in recent years. In March, HDB launched its showcase eco-precinct project near the future Punggol Town Centre. We are encouraged by the strong response. There are also plans to announce other new projects in Punggol later this year.

We thank Mr Lee for his feedback and assure residents HDB remains committed to the Punggol 21 vision. More details will be released when ready.”
