SINGAPORE: An oil spill on Lornie Road towards Queensway caused a massive traffic jam during the morning rush-hour on Tuesday (Feb 16).

The oil spill was caused by a broken-down crane truck. Its driver told Channel NewsAsia that the oil leak started along MacRitchie viaduct, and that he drove further down Lornie Road to prevent blocking traffic on the viaduct.

The crane truck was towed away at about 8.17am, while the left-most lane of Lornie Road was still closed off as workers cleaned up the spilled oil.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) first tweeted about the incident at 5.05am, saying there was an obstacle on Lornie Road after the MacRitchie viaduct. Nearly two hours later, it posted another tweet saying the obstacle had caused traffic to be backed up several kilometres to Woodleigh underpass.

At 7.15am, the police posted a tweet about the incident, saying there was an oil spill and cautioning motorists to avoid Lane 4. It later posted another tweet asking motorists to avoid the road.

Motorists heading to the city should use Upper Serangoon Road or CTE as an alternative route, LTA said.

Bus services were also diverted from Lornie Road. Services 74, 93, 157 and 165 will skip eight bus stops along Thomson Road, Lornie Road and Adam Road, according to SBS Transit.

There has been a spate of oil spills on Singapore's roads in recent weeks, including one on Jan 29 on the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE), which saw a tanker leak oil for about 10 hours before roads were resurfaced. On Feb 1, an oil spill caused by an accident between a tipper truck and an oil tanker led to two lanes being closed on the Pan Island Expressway (PIE). The following day, another oil spill forced the closure of one lane on Kampong Bahru Road. Roads had to be resurfaced in all three incidents.
